THE HITS AND MISSES OF ONLINE DATING
It’s sexy, it’s fast, it’s easy … but what happens
when online dating hijacks your life?
Meet Luci: a 21st-century “Every It Girl” determined to find love online
who winds up seeking answers by talking with more than 150 Internet daters
(young, old, gay, straight, Mormon, Jewish … ).
Their stories combine in this new multi-media show exploring the hits,
the misses and one woman’s addiction to love online.
Praised as “tart, smart and surprisingly tender” by The Denver Post, Date* weaves together the stories of a diverse group of online daters, exploring the human, hilarious and heart-warming quest for love in a hi-tech world where access comes easy but intimacy can be hard to find.
After her own adventures online took a turn, Luciann (Luci) Lajoie picked up a tape recorder and started talking to people about their experiences with online dating. She met with people she knew (and the people they knew, and the people they knew) at coffee shops, bars and pizza joints, and recorded their stories.
After about 60 interviews, Lajoie joined forces with Allison Horsley, Richard Thieriot and Ashlee Temple to conceive a script out of the collected materials. The play was workshopped in New York and at The Denver Center Theatre Company (DCTC). It premiered at DCTC’s new venture Off-Center at The Jones in April 2012 and earned rave reviews, including a nomination for “Outstanding New Play” by the Colorado Theatre Guild.
Date* is a new take on the one-woman play format, featuring a live performance by Lajoie and projections of more than 80 actors portraying the people she interviewed.
