Last chance weekend for Phoenix Art Museum’s “Medievalism”

Gaultier at Phoenix Art Museum (via my iPhone)
Dennita Sewell, fashion curator of the Phoenix Art Museum, gave a fabulous talk Thursday evening giving insight into her “Medievalism” installation currently displayed in the fashion design gallery. Sorry if you missed the talk, but there’s still a few days to see the show, including two amazing designs from the runways of John Galliano for Christian Dior and one by Jean Paul Gaulthier (both an arms length away!!) among many other fabulous designers.
May I suggest a few of highlights from Ms. Sewell’s lecture to ponder while visiting “Medievalism”…
1. The gallery walls and scenery surrounding the garments are modeled after a beautiful tapestry from the Medieval times. Imagine you’re in the tapestry. 2. The Gaultier and Dior dresses have been on loan from the design houses in Paris!! 3. The Gaultier dress, which was my personal favorite, was Ms. Sewell’s second dress choice for the show. The original dress she choose had been sold at the last minute. However, the dress received works magnificently, almost magically, with the hand-painted wall behind it. 4. Many of the other dresses and artifacts are from the “vault” at the Phoenix Art Museum. Their “vault”??? Sounds like there’s a fashion “holy grail” right here in town!!
