Waving bye, bye to the blistering heat means saying hello to cooler temps and embracing fall layering. Those cardigans that were once too thick to wear outside will feel perfectly light over summer dresses and tanks.
Fall ’11 runway shows reveled the season would be a mix of clean and minimalist looks with the return of classics like polka dots and plaid.
Designer shows like Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Dolce and Gabbana embraced black and white polka dots in sophisticated dresses, both tight and loose styles. Rag & Bone, Burberry Prorsum, Sonia Rykiel, and Carven dominated in Scottish tartan, demonstrating how the look can be both grungy and graceful. Mod inspired looks were a riot in Bottega Veneta, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Victoria Beckham’s shows, confirming again that Mad Men sixties style is in.
Keep these “Trends We Love” in mind when shopping for your fall wardrobe:
We Love Bright Accents.

Let your candy apple red and metallic silver do the talking. Dressed mainly in darker shades and solids, add a pop of color with accessories like a skinny belt, clutch or purse, and layer on the jewels.
We Love Neutral Nudes.
Rest a sure your nude colored pieces are in for the long run. This goes for garments, accessories and shoes. Whether you’re going for a business casual look or a full-on glitz and glam attire for the evening, nudes are versatile; they transition easily into any setting.
We Love to Polka. And Polka Dots.

Trust DVF, if she says polka dots are in, they’re the seaon’s most sought-after print. Nordstrom carries this gorgeous Tahari by Arthur S. Levine polka dot woven sheath dress.
We Love to Add Plaid. Or Tartan.

Suggestions for the season include a lightweight plaid mini skirt paired with a solid colored top or a fitted above the knee dress like this design from Tommy Hilfiger available at Macy’s.
We Love Lace.

A fall maxi with lace will be ideal for the beginning of fall. Once the nights get chilly, add a black leather jacket or jean jacket on top for a bohemian chic look. See Anthropologie.com for similar looks.
