RICK OWENS.

By: Lindsey

If you’ve ever found yourself dreaming in awe about an article of clothing, shoes, handbag, etc then you can certainly understand how easy it is to become addicted to fashion. For me, I didn’t truly grasp this concept until I discovered fashion designer, Rick Owens. His signature aesthetic is avant-garde, edgy, simplistic and elegant. What I love most about Rick Owens is his dedication to his art and blunt honesty. Owens believes, “Fashion is something that has to speak immediately, to hit you in the gut with something profound, something emotional. It’s a form that has to constantly be of the moment in order to provoke this reaction.”

Rick Owens started his own label in 1994 and is an American-born, Paris-based designer. In 2002, he was recognized by the CFDA with a Perry Ellis award for Emerging Talent. Madonna, Helena Bonham Carter and Courtney Love are fans of his work. When creating clothes, Owens said, “I try to make clothes the way Lou Reed does music, with minimal chord changes, and direct. It is sweet but kind of creepy. It’s about giving everything I make a worn, softened feeling. It’s about an elegance being tinged with a bit of the barbaric, the sloppiness of something dragging and the luxury of not caring.”

You can learn more about Rick Owens and shop at his official website, Net-A-Porter and see his collection for men at oki-ni.

TODAY’S FASHION AFFIRMATION

I wear clothes that fit me.

Do you wear baggy clothes that conceal your figure or are you pouring yourself into clothes that used to fit when you were thinner? Stop! Wearing clothing that is either too large or small makes you look heavier than you are. Before you leave the house each day this week, look at yourself in the mirror (preferably full length), and pay attention to how your clothes fit on your frame. If you come to the conclusion that your clothes are ill fitting, then it’s time to do some shopping! Practicing this week’s fashion affirmation will help reinforce your decision to dress for your shape.

More than anything, Fashion Phoenix stresses Fit, Fit, Fit!
